Lancia Appia GTE 1960 - Zagato built 550 Appia of all types.

The Appia is one of the most important Lancia models of the 1950s.

One of the most important Lancia models was the Lancia Appia.  Available as a two-seater from 1957 to 1959, the Appia convertible was also available as a 2 + 2 with a welded hardtop from 1959 to 1962.Many people called the 2 + 2 convertible the Luxury due to the fact that Coupe and 2 + 2 shared many similarities, were built around the same time, and needed a distinction.

Much more advanced

During the 1950s, as Lancia was creating its most beautiful cars of all time!  these cars also stood out for being much more advanced than their competitors because of their unitary body structure.Mechanically less complex than other Lancia models.  The Lancia Appia Series I and II were produced from 1953 to 1959. They inspired many prototypes of designers such as Zagota, Vignale and Pinin Farina.

The Lancia Appia - designed to replace the Ardea and - introduced to the brand in 1953. Designed by Gianni Lancia, the 1091cc Appia V-4 featured a pillarless four-door design.In 1964, the Appia was the smallest automobile in the Launch range;  by the end of the decade, the Appia was available with 1216cc and 1298cc engines.

Rear wheel drive vehicle

Sharing some of the components of the Appia, the Lancia Fulvia was created to replace the Appia.  While the Appia was a rear-wheel drive vehicle, the Fulvia was updated for front-wheel drive.The Appia was a smaller version of the Aurelia, which was the first Lancia to officially compete in motorsport.  The Aurelia was also the first car in the world to feature a 60-degree V 6-cylinder engine with differential;  gearbox and clutch, all mounted as a single unit on the rear axle.

During this decade, the Lancia brand became heavily involved in motorsport under the influence of Gianni Lancia.  Models - built from production for use in competitions, with outstanding results.

The company sold to Fiat

Financial difficulties forced Gianni to sell his business to Fiat several years later, in 1969. All motorsport activities ceased!  the financial situation reached such a point that the majority of Gianni's holdings were sold to Pesenti, a financial group.
