The Ferrari 488 Spider is a convertible racing car for the road.

The Ferrari 488 Spyder is the natural successor to the highly acclaimed 458 Spider.  She blew journalists and owners alike with her performance, poise and general sense of occasion.  It was also quite pleasant to watch.  So when Ferrari announced the replacement for the 458, prickly ears and checkbooks opened;  but is the 488 a worthy successor?  Powered by an 8th-gen V8, in this case a 3.9-liter twin-turbo unit, the 488 Spider produces a monumental power of 661 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque and will propel the 488 from 0 to 100 km / h in  about three seconds flat.

It should also impress Dominic Toretto with his quarter-mile time of just 10.55 seconds.  The 488 improved upon the 458’s recipe in every way imaginable on paper, but sometimes efficiency and crunching numbers get in the way of a pure driving experience.  Perhaps the 488 Spider has become too exceptional for its own good.

488 Spider exterior

The Ferrari 488 Spyder is not only a thing of beauty, but has proper racing technology, which is usually reserved for the track.  The specialized underbody aero improves downforce, and interestingly, the 488 Spider's roof comes off faster than any other Ferrari V8 model (14 seconds).  The design is similar to the 458 it replaces, however, it is reminiscent of the berlinettes of yesteryear, with the side air intakes reminiscent of the old 308 GTB intakes.

Strangely, the 488 Spider was not originally available in Ferrari Red: the first batch of cars was sold in a metallic blue, while the classic colors were not available until later.

Performance

The 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 engine under the rear hood has divided opinions among Ferrari fans.  Some purists claiming that forced induction harmed the overall driving experience!  while others have praised the engine for its monstrous levels of torque and astonishing overall power.  The power outputs are impressive!  you get 661 hp at 8,000 rpm and 561 lb-ft of torque at 6,750 rpm in seventh gear.  An important claim, as Ferrari electronically limits torque in lower gears to simulate the building progression of a naturally aspirated.  engine.

For those who think adding a turbocharger would cause a lag, Ferrari claims a throttle reaction time of just 0.8 seconds at 2,000 rpm in third gear;  in reality, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the old engine and this one.  The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is precise and fast and complements the engine beautifully.  Ferrari claims a 0-100 km / h time of three seconds flat and a quarter-mile of just 10.55 seconds.

Interior

Ferrari has always placed great importance on the way the driver and the car connect to each other;  the more you can feel at one with the car, the better.  They got closer with the 488 GTB and 488 Spider two-seater.  The narrow cab features wraparound satellite modules that tilt towards the driver!  and the more compact dashboard with angled air vents emphasizes this driver-focused space.

What is the price

You'll have to spit dough if you want to get behind the wheel of the Ferrari 488 Spyder;  Ferrari is asking $ 280,900, which does not include the destination charge of $ 3,750.  The 488 Spider sits at the higher end of the cost scale!  but there are competitors who demand much more.  The McLaren 720S, for example, will set you back an additional $ 34,100 for a total of $ 315,000.  The addition of optional extras such as a two-tone paint job;  Goldrake racing bucket seats;  Carbon fiber exterior detailing will quickly bring the base price closer to that of the McLaren.
